This book is very readable, and yet has a strong underlying structure based on sound psychological principles, clinical experience, and research findings. Gail’s skills, and integrity, in conveying subtle and sophisticated psychological knowledge in a most readable fashion are remarkable.

Your Brain, Friend & FOE

Your greatest asset and your biggest saboteur

Your brain is arguably your greatest asset. However, while being your greatest friend, it is often your greatest foe!

It is a strange conundrum. Inadvertently, it is a great saboteur in its role as the great protector of your life!

It can and frequently does sabotage you and, it will also regularly hijack your relationships, all without your knowledge.

How is this possible? The answer lies in how our brains evolved.

When we understand how our brains are wired we can take more control over this less than helpful part of our mind. We understand that our brains are doing the best they can but have not quite evolved to the degree that we need to live happy successful lives. We have to take over and have awareness of what’s really going on.

This information comes to you in 7 key understandings, based on easy psychology and neuroscience – illustrated with lots of examples.  It will enable you to take control of your brain, reduce self-sabotage, and become more successful.

While this new book combines aspects from my two previous books it goes much further in explaining why our brilliant brain often sabotages us.

We delve into how our brain evolved, from reptilian brain through to our sophisticated neo-cortex, which is what we think we use all the time but actually only use about 5% of the time!  A frightening thought, but our neo-cortex demands slow effortful thinking, which consumes a good deal of energy. And crocodile brain, which really runs our show, is fast and dynamic. Its job is to ensure our survival at all costs. It thinks it has to conserve energy in case there is a tiger around the corner that we need to escape from. In the ancient past of our development there were plenty of very real physical dangers, but today the dangers are different, hardly involving lions and tigers.

This is the part of our current software that we need to upgrade, which is what this book is about. It is the part that has been programmed without our knowledge and we still run on those old blueprints until we gain this vital awareness.

When we understand logically why we think the way we do we can see the changes we need to make, it makes sense, changes are easier and all aspects of life improve. Eliminating a lot of the tense interactions we have with others, our health improves, stress reduces and our optimism increases.

This book is designed to help leaders, managers and anyone interested in their brain, understand its impact on business and relationships.

It deals with the unconscious, which is the largest part of our brain, and influences all our thoughts, beliefs and behaviour.

The unconscious governs every motivation and emotion we have. It affects everything in business, from relationships to profitability. Yet most of us are unaware of its presence, let alone its power.

The Brain's Business details seven psychological keys, backed by simple neuroscience that enables us to make lasting changes. As we understand how our brains are wired and how to leverage that information we are able to move ahead to greater influence and success.
